It has been brought to my attention that your class is not going to be having a Christmas party this year if not I would like to know why. I can guarantee that 90% of your class believes in celebrating Christmas and if it is being pushed aside for the remaining 10% I think is bull. As a parent I am sick and tired of political correctness being shoved down my child’s throat she should not be punished for what SHE BELIEVES IN.
First off, thank you for letting me know about your concerns. I have had many types of parties but I have never had a party just to celebrate any one person’s beliefs. As a 5th grade teacher, I teach about many different cultures and we might even participate in some of their traditions. We are having an Explorers Feast today as part of a celebration to wrap up what we are studying in Social Studies. We will have more celebrations throughout the year. For example, last year we made castle cakes in December as we finished the book we were reading. Although, I am not sure what we will be doing this year, we might make the castle cakes again. I would also like you to know that this is not something new this year. This is the way I have always done things. It is not my intentions to punish any student for their beliefs. Each teacher selects what type of party they want to have and what time of year they are going to have their class celebrations/party. Again, thank you for voicing your concerns. I hope this has answered your question.

I would love to make a comment more as a mediator or arbitrator on the subject of the Christmas party or lack there of. And, let me first say, I am a Christian and we celebrate Christmas heartily.
With all the media coverage and controversy over saying Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, and even recent coverage over mangers being displayed in public, etc. I can easily see how it could be presumed that these reasons may be the case here.
However, I must also say that having been in the school four years now and having worked with Ms. Oneal on several different projects whether it be visiting a play in her room, going by to look at the different activities, etc., that her motives are far from politically based. Everything she does, whether it be a party or otherwise, is a basis for learning. And, the students enjoy doing things different than everyone else.
I could easily see Tina teaching a comparitive religions or comparitive Christmas practices if she were to celebrate traditionally just because she would want the students to learn and understand the differences. I’ve seen books compared in her class, beliefs of what they were studying compared in her class, interpretation compared in her class, etc. She always lets the students come up with their own conclusions.
Hope this helps…
